BAR-UP Program

Jeffrey W. Berger, M.D., Ph.D. (1963-2001) was an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology (Retina Service) at the University of Pennsylvania and director of the Computer Vision Laboratory at Penn’s Scheie Eye Institute. Dr. Berger was internationally recognized for his work on computer-based retinal imaging and first editor of a major textbook on age-related macular degeneration. He was an outstanding teacher and advocate for medical students. Because of his strong commitment to mentoring students in medical research, the Foundation created a medical student research award in 2005. The Berger Award for Research at the University of Pennsylvania (BAR-UP) supports the research of one or two PennMed 3rd year students who dedicate at least 3 months to basic or clinical ophthalmic research. In addition, the students become part of the Jeffrey W. Berger legacy of outstanding ophthalmic clinical care, research, teaching, humility, and kindness.

Dr. Joshua Dunaief is seen here presenting the first Jeffrey W. Berger Research Scholarship Foundation Award in 2005 to Alison Skalet (seen on left) and Jennifer Fisher (seen on right).
